It all started with the fish when the innovative shapers and board builders out there decided to revisit the past for some inspiration. In doing so they brought back some lost skills such as resin tints and hand foiled fins. The Fish Fry has been a place for these fine craftsmen to showcase their skills. We have seen some amazing boards as shapers have pushed the boundaries over the last few years. As this new look at the fish has evolved to its many forms, it has influenced other shapes and designs along the way. This has spawned a renewed interest in other board forms by this same group and a wider following.Notably the Mini Simmons, Hulls, old school Logs and Pigs. It is pleasing to note that there are an increasing number of people building their own boards as well. All of this is to be applauded and celebrated as a positive for surfing. So it is only natural that these shapers and board builders continue to share their skills with us and include these other shapes at the Fish Fry.It has truly become a melting pot of ideas for like minded people.

Grown knee board

Andrew Wells at Grown Surfboards has been making foam dust instead of wood shavings of late. Here is his latest, " a 5'10 fish kneeboard and was a custom order for Keith down at Deus. It has got a really deep double concave out through the tail with a bit of a dome up near the middle between the convaces. It has a really nice magenta resin tint with hand foiled green fins."

TK // JULY 2012 from tyson kozuszek on Vimeo.

Nice to see a young guy like Tyson ripping on boards from two different shapers who both make great boards. Never met Adrian from Rake , but we stay in touch with our blogs and I love his art and passion for what he does. Eden is local here on the Gold Coast and I bump into him in the shaping bays of Currumbin. A paid life guard who now shapes boards most of the time. Both guys love to experiment and do different things which is what I love to see. Thanks guys for mixing it up and keeping it interesting for us all.

Chusma Surfboards from North Western Spain

Chus , just sent me a link to some of his latest boards for summer. I have featured some of his boards before and they standout as great workmanship in hand shaping , glassing and finish. I am sure you will agree he does a great job.So if you are in this part of the world and looking for something different he is your go to man.

Diversity

We are in interesting times where nothing is out of the question in terms of what people are willing to shape surf and experiment with. I think this is a pretty diverse lineup. If this guy is riding all of these he is an all rounder in the true sense of the word.

Italian Surfing Festival 21 - 23 September

Good friend Marco Mazzini has just given me the heads up that another Fish Fry inspired surfing festival is planned this year at VERSILIA ( NW TUSCANY) ITALY. They have a great location right on the beach at Pietrasanta which is just 30km north of Pisa. I was there last June. The local Govt have given them a prime spot right amongst the beachside resorts and sports clubs where they have built a club house meeting place for local and visiting surfers to meet and hang out. Last Saturday they kicked off their season with a great shaping clinic from Chris Christenson , as a Pre-FEST happening. Marco said  " It was great! You should like his live shape of a  5.4 ocean racer (simmons meets twin keel)." They have a very passionate local surf culture and wait for wind swell big enough to chase waves near the local pier. If you are traveling and are near Tuscany this time of year , you will have a great time in a beautiful part of the world.

Longboarding in Townsville

If you head too far north looking for surf and end up in Townsville you can always look up a new bar that will welcome you for sure. The Longboard Bar and Grill may be a little distant from a surf beach but a cold beer is a cold beer and up there it can wash away the heat of the day year round.

Owner Chris Haddad says  "the name Longboard itself is a brand concept that was conceived by ex-ironman and good friend of Chris, Jonathon Crowe and his surfing buddies. “So we carry the brand, stock the boutique Longboard beer and also support the venue with a range of Queensland favorites supplied by Lion including their iconic XXXX brands, Hahn Super Dry, Heineken and the James Squire range. This ensures we are offering a wide assortment of local and imported beverages for all tastes."

New Zealand 1965

Surf Safari, Newdicks Beach 1965

Onboard are local Maketu surfer Niven Ray, Rotorua team Roger Edwards, Lindsay Sundgren and Chris Blincoe along with driver, Jimmy Isdale and on roof - Chris Wells.
The van was stacked with Roger Land and Bob Davie mals.  I believe the photo was taken by Rotorua surfer journalist Philip Smith.
The boys chased the surf all the way up to Little Waihi by driving along the beach. Weekends were spent bunking down in Niven Ray's parents garage at Maketu.
